Velocity vs. speed
v = Δx / Δt
Speed is how fast; velocity is how fast in a direction, computed from displacement rather than path length. Run a lap of a track in 60 s and your average speed is 400 m / 60 s = 6.7 m/s, but your average velocity is zero: you ended where you started. For straight-line motion the two match, and this calculator serves both.

100 m in 9.58 s is Usain Bolt's world record: 10.44 m/s average, 37.6 km/h. His peak speed mid-race was around 12.3 m/s, which is why average figures always understate the top-end.
