Measuring odd-shaped rooms
Break the space into rectangles, calculate each, and add them up (use the quantity field for identical sections). An L-shaped room is two rectangles; a room with a bay is a rectangle plus a small one. For triangles, use half of length × width.
Buying flooring? Add waste
Flooring and tile are sold with cuts and breakage in mind: add 10% for straight-lay planks or tile, and 15% for diagonal layouts or rooms with many corners. Carpet comes in fixed widths (usually 12 ft), so the purchased area is often more than the room area.
