How much should you tip?
In the US, 15 to 20% is standard for table service, 18% being a safe default; 10% signals below-par service and 25%+ rewards excellent service. For counter service and takeout, 0 to 10% is normal. In much of Europe service is included and rounding up is enough.
Tip on pre-tax or post-tax?
Etiquette says the pre-tax subtotal, and nobody will ever complain about that. In practice most people tip on the total because it is the number staring at them. The difference on a typical meal is small: on an $85 bill with 8% tax, 18% pre-tax vs. post-tax differs by about $1.22.
