E = ½ mv² + mgh

Without friction, the total stays constant while the two parts trade: a roller coaster at the top is all PE, at the bottom all KE, and the sum never changes. That single idea solves most 'how fast at the bottom' problems without touching forces or time.

When it leaks

Friction and drag bleed mechanical energy into heat, so real totals only ever decrease. Measuring how much went missing IS how you quantify friction losses in a system.
