Decimal to Fraction Converter

Any decimal to a simplified fraction, with the reduction shown.

The method

Write the digits after the decimal point over the matching power of ten, then reduce. 0.375 is 375/1000; the greatest common divisor of 375 and 1000 is 125, so it reduces to 3/8. 2.625 becomes 2625/1000 = 21/8, or 2 5/8 as a mixed number.

Repeating decimals

A repeating decimal is not a power-of-ten fraction, so typing 0.333 gives the honest answer 333/1000, not 1/3. For the exact fraction of a repeating decimal, put the repeating block over as many nines: 0.333... = 3/9 = 1/3, and 0.142857142857... = 142857/999999 = 1/7. The fraction to decimal converter goes the other way and finds the repeating block for you.

Common decimals as fractions

0.125 = 1/8. 0.2 = 1/5. 0.25 = 1/4. 0.375 = 3/8. 0.4 = 2/5. 0.5 = 1/2. 0.625 = 5/8. 0.75 = 3/4. 0.875 = 7/8. 0.0625 = 1/16. In woodworking and machining these eighths and sixteenths are the tape-measure marks.
