The estimate
Patio area divided by one paver's area, plus waste for edge cuts. A 12 × 10 ft patio in 8 × 4 inch pavers needs 540 before waste, 567 with 5%. Curved edges and circle kits cut far more pavers; use 10% there. The sand figure is a 1-inch (25 mm) bedding layer, which is what sits directly under the pavers.
The base does the real work
Under the bedding sand goes 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel base (more for driveways), which is what keeps the surface flat through winters. Skipping or under-compacting the base is why DIY patios wave and sink; the pavers themselves almost never fail. Order base gravel with the gravel calculator.
