Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply or divide two fractions. Simplified, as a mixed number, and as a decimal.
How fraction arithmetic works
Add/subtract: put both fractions over a common denominator, then add or subtract the tops: a/b ± c/d = (ad ± cb) / bd. Multiply: straight across, tops together, bottoms together. Divide: flip the second fraction and multiply: a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c.
Simplifying
The result is reduced by dividing top and bottom by their greatest common divisor (GCD). 3/4 + 2/3 = 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12, already in lowest terms, which as a mixed number is 1 5/12 and as a decimal about 1.4167.
