Why the half

U = F × δ / 2

The force builds from zero to F as the part deflects, so the stored energy is the area under that triangle: half of force times deflection. It's Hooke's spring energy in structural clothing, and it's what a bow stores before the arrow flies and what a bolt holds as preload.
