Δx = x_f - x_i
Distance is the odometer: how much ground was covered. Displacement is start-to-finish as the crow flies, with a sign for direction. Walk 3 m east then 8 m west and you traveled 11 m of distance, but your displacement is -5 m. Velocity, work and every kinematics formula run on displacement, not distance.
