How steps become calories

Your walking step length is close to 41% of your height, which turns steps into distance. At a casual pace (5 km/h, 3.5 METs) the energy cost is 3.5 × weight in kg per hour of walking. For a 72 kg person of average height, 10,000 steps is roughly 7 km, an hour and a half of walking, and 350 to 400 kcal.

Where 10,000 steps came from

The target began as a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing campaign, not science. Research since shows health benefits rising steeply up to about 7,000 to 8,000 steps a day and flattening beyond that. More is still fine; the magic round number is just marketing that stuck.

Precision honesty

Phones and watches disagree with each other by 5 to 10% on the same walk, stride length varies with pace and terrain, and brisk walking burns more per step than strolling. Treat step counts as a consistent trend meter rather than an exact energy ledger; day-to-day consistency matters more than the third digit.
