Why 25% off + 20% off is not 45% off

Stacked discounts apply one after the other, each on the already-reduced price. $120 at 25% off is $90; an extra 20% off that gives $72, an effective 40% total, not 45%. Retailers know the stacked wording sounds bigger than it is.

The mental math shortcut

To take X% off, multiply by (100 - X)/100. For 25% off, multiply by 0.75. For quick estimates: 10% is just the price with the decimal moved one place, and other discounts are multiples of that: 30% off $80 is 3 × $8 = $24 off.
