Heat capacity belongs to a whole OBJECT: this pot, that engine block. Divide it by the mass and you get the material's specific heat. 50 kJ warming something by 12 K means C = 4.17 kJ/K, and it's how calorimeters weigh energy: burn the sample, read the temperature rise, multiply.
